BioBlitz 2015: Pourewa Reserve and Kepa Bush (Auckland)

BioBlitz recorded a total of 1007 species at Pourewa Reserve and Kepa Bush, over the course of 22 hours.  This is an outstanding result and a credit to all the people who took part.

When was BioBlitz?: Fri 27 Mar, 10am – 11pm; Sat 28 Mar, 7am – 4pm

Where?:  Pourewa Reserve, 111 Kepa Road.

Pourewa Reserve has recently been returned to the ownership of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei who aim to restore the mauri (life force) of the land. BioBlitz will provide them with data to inform their restoration plan. BioBlitz also recorded which species occur in the adjacent Kepa Bush, as this will act as a reservoir for Pourewa.

Looks like a such a fun trip. I wonder if my children would enjoy something like this!

They certainly would! We find that when families come along, they stay for several hours (sometimes the entire day) because their kids have such a ball exploring a whole new world. Hope to see you there.

Is there a particular part of the reserve to meet? Are there session times or can you arrived anytime that suits?

Hope to have the programme of ‘field trips’ etc up later today but you are welcome to visit at any time. Base camp will be a big marquee below the St Heliers pony club … the only flat ground! There will be heaps of displays and hands on stuff at base camp, and all the field trips will depart from there.

Hi Judy, would it be too late if we come along just after lunch time? Thanks. Harrison

No, not too late at all but do leave time to have a good look. We finish at 4pm on Saturday so the last field trips are likely to finish about 2pm (to be confirmed by tomorrow) ‘cos everyone will be flat out trying to get the last species identified and tallied..

We loved Grace’s spider and insect hunt tonight in Kepa Bush. After we got home, my hard-to-impress five year old spontaneously volunteered, “I had a great time”. High praise indeed. Thanks team!
